Booker T. Washington (1859--1915) was a political leader, educator, and author. He helped guide the political efforts of freed African Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Charles T. Bolton (1943-- ) was the first astronomer to provide strong evidence of the existence of black holes. Colin Powell (1937-- ) was the first African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was the nation's first African American Secretary of State. Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee (1898--1980) was a physician who established medical aid to the poor in the Washington D.C. area. Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862--1931) refused to give up her train seat to a white passenger 71 years before Rosa Parks did the same in a bus. Wells-Barnett's actions and journalistic exposure of lynching made her a hero to later civil rights protesters. James Meredith (1933-- ) (center) helped integrate the University of Mississippi by enrolling there in 1962. Michelle Obama (1964-- ) is the nation's first African American First Lady. She was a practicing lawyer before her husband was elected president. Neil deGrasse Tyson (1958-- ) is director of the Hayden Planetarium in Manhatten. He also hosts science programming on PBS. He frequently appears on The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Jeopardy! Zora Neale Hurston (1891--1916) was a famous author of the Harlem Renaissance. She published 4 novels and over 50 plays, short stories, and essays.
